I am looking to get away for a couple of days by myself (single woman). I’ve tried going away with people I am not really close with and it just turns into a huge disappointment every time I go. I love beautiful scenery, shops and street fairs, and anything else relatively cheap that would keep me entertained and having fun while on vacation alone. I feel so lonely at home and I am looking for an escape from it so something that will not make me feel out of place or lonely would be great! Thanks for your input!!

Mardi Gras and the Jazz Festival are world famous events, but New Orleans hosts many festivals and celebrations throughout the year: www.nola.com/festivals
There are many tours offered and examples are:

There is always music, but the bands change: Go to www.bestofneworleans.com and click on Music then Listings or to www.offbeat.com and click on Listings, then Music.
Note that music clubs often advertise “No Cover”, meaning there is no charge for entering. However, clubs with “No Cover” often require that customers buy a beverage each for every “set” of music (which can be every 20 minutes) so KNOW THE PRICE before you sit down. Clubs do that because some people will sit in the club all evening drinking nothing (clubs only make money from the drinks they sell – not from the music). It is also a good idea to pay for each round of drinks (in clubs on Bourbon Street) as it is delivered so there can’t be any confusion at the end of the evening.
An incomplete guide to bars & clubs:

About certain alcoholic beverages: Realize that some famous drinks are VERY potent compared with regular cocktails that have only 1 to 1 ½ ounces of alcohol. For example, a Hurricane is basically 3 or 4 ounces of rum in something like red Kool-Aid, and a Hand Grenade has at least 4 ½ ounces of Everclear + rum + vodka mixed with melon liquor. They don’t necessarily taste like an alcoholic beverage and it is easy to over-indulge.
I wish you a great time, wherever you go!

when is the best time to book if i am leaving in september? i want to get the cheapest flights and specials dont seem up yet for that time of year. i will be flying out of brisbane and into bangkok.
any help is appreciated
You can usually get good-priced flights to Bangkok with Jetstar up to about 3-4 weeks beforehand if it’s not a peak time (like school hols), but I’m referring to Jetstar’s normal fares rather than special sale fares.
For sale fares, just subscribe to Jetstar and keep an eye out for the sales… There should be a good sale between now and then, but you always need to be quick.
You can keep track of price movements using Adioso:
http://www.adioso.com/search/brisbane-to-bangkok.html
It only covers about 3 months into the future so it won’t help you with September flights just yet, but will give you a good idea of how the price fluctuates.
Also, note that Air Asia has some great deals from Gold Coast to Kuala Lumpur:
http://www.adioso.com/search/gold-coast-to-kuala-lumpur.html
From KL, you can get to anywhere in Thailand really cheaply:
http://www.adioso.com/search/kuala-lumpur-to-bangkok.html
http://www.adioso.com/search/kuala-lumpur-to-thailand.html
UPDATE:
Chaos’s answer is not correct; prices fluctuate a lot, and attractive sales can happen at any time. You’re best to keep an eye on the prices to understand how they move.
It is a good idea to be careful not to hold out too long for a cheaper price and risk the price going up, but if you buy about 3-4 weeks out you should be fine.

I am looking for cheap flights from paris to Rome in July 2011. When is the best time to book. One way flights at the moment seem to be very expensive compared to the one way flights. When is the best time to look for airfares for this time? Also if it is cheaper to get a return can you buy a return ticket and only use it the one way? How do you cancel the return and are there any charges attached? Thank you
Lots of questions there! Start looking now, but don’t book until you have a price you are happy with. You are only going one way? Airlines frown upon travelers booking roundtrip and not taking the return flight, but it is done all the time because it is sometimes cheaper. Tickets prices change on a daily basis, and sometimes more often than that, so keep an eye on them. You can sign up with farefinder and it will send you updates on fares. Definitely check airlines with hubs in those two cities. Once you get an idea of what flights are going for, you will know when you find a good price.

If you are 18-26, EF College break has some good ones. I just got of a trip with them, and it was a lot of fun. Their discount code is hesseln1188 too by the way if you want to use them, otherwise, I use kKayak to find the cheapest airfare and Farecast to find cheap dates. Expedia also sometimes offers some really great cheap deals, but thats just a manner of stumbling upon it at the right time. Goodluck!
