Your Questions About Best Cheap Airfare Flights

Susan asks…

When is the best time to book flights for the cheapest airfares?

I’m looking to travel to the far east in Feb 2011 for a wedding (my own) and I was under the impression the earlier you book the better. Looking at the prices now it dose not seem to be the case since I have flown there before and often for an awful lot less. I’m also looking to advise our guests of the best time to book. Is there a time before a date when prices get really competitive?

Mel Still answers:

Book as far in advance as you can. Airlines release their fares about ten months in advance and those are normally the best prices. Recently most airlines serving the far East and Australia have been increasing fares to try to claw back some of their losses from the last couple of years I am afraid. You can wait in the hope that one will announce a sale but it is a bit of a lottery. I fly to Australia about three times a year and have only once been caught out with cheaper fares becoming available closer to the date of travel.

I do agree with another answer that you should look at different days of the week as airlines will price differentiate according to when they get the most custom. Avoid public and school holidays because fares shoot up at these times because they know they can get away with it.

Your Questions About Cheap Travel Destinations Usa

Mandy asks…

Help planning tour of USA?

Hi there,

I have just graduated and I am currently working back home in the UK to save up plenty of money to do a nice trip before I go back and do my post-grad. I would like to do America and South America, even though I know it will be expensive it appeals more to me than places like Thailand etc. which are unfamiliar and would be alot more dangerous.

I have family friends around the USA e.g. Texas, Washington State and New Jersey and I would like to plan a trip around America that would fit in with those destinations. I was thinking of doing a sort of Zig-Zag starting from Washington state heading south to California then zigging up to New Jersey then south from there down to Texas.

However there doesnt seem to be any facilities in a way that I can plan my trip but stop and visit states and attractions in between the journey. Does anyone know of any good resources to help me plan. I looked at the Visit America website which has good info on what to visit but isnt really helpful in planning a route.

What would be the best way to travel around america? Rail, Coach or Plane?

I appreciate being in big cities but I also like being out in the wilderness so if anyone knows some good places to see. I have been plenty of times before to USA with family e.g. Florida, New York, Georgia so I would like to try and avoid covering familiar territory.

Some things I would like to see: Colorado River, Rockies, Grand Canyon, Nevada Desert, Black Mountain, Ground Zero,

States I really want to goto: Oregon, New Mexico, Colorado, Kentucky, Massechuesits, Michigan, North Carolina, Kansas (although I hear its just full of fields).

Any help would be much appreciated and thankyou for your time!

Also any methods of doing some stuff on the cheap would be helpful :)
Also any stuff to watch out for would be great too :)

Mel Still answers:

Really, the best way to start the planning process is to sit down with a large map of the US. Mark on it the places you want to go and work from there. Each state has it’s own tourism sights. Most cities will also. Since you are talking about the Grand Canyon and Black Hills (I’m guessing that’s what Black Mountain refers to), go to the National Park Service website. ( nps.gov )
Getting around across the huge distances you are pondering will require some creativity and a whole bunch of research. Some airlines offer passes, as does Amtrak (rail). I think Greyhound (coach) does as well.
I just want to point out that it will take almost as long to fly from NYC to Portland, OR and it does to fly from the UK to NYC. I say that only as a reference to use in trying to figure out how much ground you are planning on covering.
I hope that helps a little.

Your Questions About Cheap Travel Flights China

Mandy asks…

Are there passenger ships that travel from the U.S. to China?

I’m already looking to find the cheapest flights to China, but I was curious to see if there is another way there while I’m at it. Thanks! :)

Mel Still answers:

There are cruise ship tours from the US to Asia, but most make very quick stops at Japan, Korea, China, Hong Kong, rather than just going to China. They are VERY expensive. You might consider a cargo ship; most have very nice accomodations, you eat with the Captain, very quiet, VCR/DVD for movies, etc. The drawbacks are: no floorshows, few other passengers (typically, 6 – 8), may have to walk on deck around cargo containers, etc. The cost is generally about the same as Business Class on an airline. The biggest drawback, over flying, is the time element – typically a week from the West Coast to China even for a direct voyage. A friend of mine (retired) travels all over the world this way, and loves it (reads books on the long trip).

Your Questions About Best Cheap Airfare Canada

Charles asks…

Traveling from Montreal to Hong Kong in August. Best to buy airfare now or wait?

I don’t like sites like expedia, etc. I will book directly with Air Canada, but I’ve been checking prices recently, and they seem to be going down. Right now I’m looking at around $2000 with all taxes, which is a lot of money. Do you think it will be cheaper if I wait till June or July? If I end up paying like $100 more at the end it’s no big deal, but if I book now, then see a $500 drop, I’ll be pissed off.

Mel Still answers:

I am surprised that the fare is going down. This is unusual. I try to book as far in advance as I can because prices will go up the closer it gets to departure.

Your Questions About Cheap Travel Tickets Mexico

Joseph asks…

Can you help me look for cheap airline tickets to Mexico?

Okay so i tried but they are all pretty expensive. I am looking for traveling in June 20-July 20th 2009. 2 passengers, a 15 year old and Senior from LAX to GDL. Price range is 200$-400$. Thank you.

Mel Still answers:

You should definitely be able to find something in your range. I am going to give you the only piece of advice that was given to me for finding cheap travel deals, and it works to this day… Compare as many travel websites as you can as often as you can. Since you have a few months, start searching today and search the flights or hotels or whatever you need every week until the month before you are going. If anything is unusually cheaper, book it on that date. I would definitely recommend checking out the website BookMe. You can compare ALL the reputable travel sites from one location, and save tons of money. Good luck and check out the link below, and you will be all set.

Your Questions About Cheap Pet Travel Airlines

Sandy asks…

Pet Friendly Airlines?

Hello! I will be purchasing a one-way plane ticket in the next 24 hours to complete our move from FL to NJ later this week. I usually fly Continental Airlines or Jet Blue, both of which charge a $100+ fee (yes, additional to my ticket cost!) to carry on my Italian Greyhound in his travel bag.

***He is very well mannered, quiet & sweet; We have Never had any problems traveling together. He behaves better than the small, irritating, screaming children do (there’s always at least one, on every flight) So before you answer along the lines of “Oh, for pete’s sake, its a dog, lady! Fly him down below for cheaper!”, please understand, He IS MY CHILD & enjoys all the things a human child would- flying him cargo in a kennel Is both Dangerous & Completely Unacceptable to me. I don’t ask for the annoying screaming human brats to go down below (though I admit, occasionally I am tempted), so Please, RESPECT MY BABY TOO. ***

I am just wondering if there is an airline which either charges nothing (bills a pet In his/her airline-approved carry-on case AS your one item of carry-on luggage) or charges less than the $100-125 fee?

Thank You in advance for Your answer :)

Mel Still answers:

Come to Minneapolis. Not sure about costs, but you can come to the Mall of America which is just huge and a lot of fun. Also you can go to the Lake Minnetonka for a 2 hour lunch buffet and that is fun. Also going to downtown Minneapolis is fun too with all the sky-ways. You will have fun if you come…
